Maria came to the City of Rockford Human Services for the first time in 2002 seeking housing assistance. Her family moved to Boone County after they lost their home due to her husband’s disability. The couple had four children all under 18 years of age. Moreover, she was not employed, nor was her husband. The family received help with their rent and utility assistance. Her husband was able to obtain disability through Social security and Maria received job referrals to local businesses. Once her husband began receiving social security benefits, the family opened an IDA account that lasted two years. They used their savings for Maria to go to school. She completed her GED and took some college classes. Maria gained a new job as a salesperson where she is very happy and successful.
Their daughter was enrolled in the Boone County Youth Program for four years until she graduated. She joined the Marines two years ago. She was recently deployed to Afghanistan the first week of March. Her job there consists of searching Afghan women for suicidal bombs. Her parents are both sad yet proud of their daughter for they know she will be successful and hope that she returns home safely.
This year Maria and her husband are the leaders of a group of 20 people working in a community garden.
